As part of the Karavasta Solar project, Voltalia installed 3,767 bird diverters along the project transmission line to help reduce the risk of bird collisions with overhead lines. According to project records, this is the first transmission line in Albania equipped with bird diverters.
Bird diverters, also known as bird flight diverters, are small devices installed on overhead electrical lines to make them more visible to birds in flight. Overhead wires can be difficult for birds to detect, particularly in open landscapes, wetland areas, migration corridors, and low-light conditions. By increasing the visibility of the line, diverters give birds more time to see the obstacle and adjust their flight path.
The Karavasta area is located near important natural habitats, including the wider Karavasta Lagoon landscape. For this reason, biodiversity protection has been an important consideration in the development of the project. The installation of bird diverters is one practical measure aimed at reducing potential impacts on birdlife while supporting the safe operation of the transmission infrastructure.
Bird diverters do not change the function of the line. Their role is simple: they make the line easier to see. Depending on the type used, they may increase visibility through shape, colour, contrast, reflection, or movement. This kind of measure is widely used internationally to help reduce bird collision risks associated with overhead power lines.
Through this initiative, Voltalia demonstrates how renewable energy infrastructure can be developed with attention to both climate action and biodiversity protection.
